eTrex Legend HCx GPS

Back to article by category overview

For our field trips we use a GPS device to navigate to bunkers with pre loaded locations. We also use the device to log bunkers found in for inclusion on the website. We bought a eTrex HCx from Garmin as a light weight and cost effective device. Together with additional maps especially the German map this device is a treat.

But you can not only use the device for navigation but also for Geotagging your pictures by logging the routes in the field and use Photomapper to include the GPS data in the picture. This is done by comparing the timestamp of the picture with the logged route, so sync the time between the devices! Your geotagged images can be uploaded to

On the website we have included links to GPX files containing the GPS data per bunker (pillbox) for easy download and import to your GPS device.

What's in the Box:
  • eTrex Vista HCx
  • Basemap (installed)
  • MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager (PC software)
  • USB cable
  • Wrist strap
  • Owner's manual
  • Quick reference guide

See our other article with field tips for more information about field trips.

For this device (as with most GPS devices) you can buy maps you can upload to your GPS device. These maps are not only limited to roads and highways but some versions also have topographic detail so the can be used off road. As you can see the maps are really great as you can see by comparing a scan from a map (Wahlerscheid crossing area).
